Computer Engineering (Ph.D.)

Both the Ph.D. in computer engineering and the Ph.D. in computer science programs are offered through the research-intensive Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS). CACS makes its research laboratories and equipment available to students and maintains close working relationships with several research centers like the Center for Business and Information Technology (CBIT), Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise (LITE), and UL NASA Regional Application Center (RAC).

Requirements for either doctoral program include coursework divided into four phrases: breadth, depth, dissertation proposal, and dissertation execution and completion. All Ph.D. in computer science or computer engineering students are required to pass comprehensive exams and take courses in architecture, software, theory, and applications.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Engineering is designed for persons who seek faculty positions in colleges and universities or who desire senior designer research, or development positions in industry, government, or universities.

Persons who possess at least a baccalaureate degree in electrical or computer engineering and who show exceptional promise in their previous academic work are encouraged to apply.

We’re ranked in the NSF’s top 60 for research and development expenditures. Lafayette is home to multiple high-tech companies that have partnered with the University, offering excellent internship opportunities for our master’s in computer science students.
