Physics (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Physics will prepare you to enter various technical fields, advance in your current profession, or prepare for doctoral studies. Both thesis and non-thesis tracks are available. In either case, you will have the opportunity to work on independent research projects under close mentoring from your research adviser. Often M.S. student research is conducive to peer-review publications.
The M.S. Physics program offers two general research focus areas and many specialties.
Applied Physics
Specialties in applied physics include environmental physics, experimental underwater acoustics, ion beam analysis and modification, instrumentation, materials science, space physics, and ultrasonics.
Computational Physics
Specialties in computational physics include physical acoustics, planetary science and space science, geophysics, nanomagnetic materials, and signal processing.
Both thesis and non-thesis tracks are available.
Physics at 麻豆夜市
Research for a Reason
Our research pushes the boundaries of knowledge. Regionally, we study marine mammals using acoustics in the Gulf of Mexico, clean up environmental pollution in Louisiana鈥檚 marshes and waterways, and partner with local hospitals for medical research and to develop treatments.
Globally, we partner with geosciences experts to study earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. We are building bridges between physics, astrophysics, and planetary science through cosmochemical studies of meteorites and developing acoustic sensing techniques for planetary exploration.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
Physics majors can get paid undergraduate research assistantships in the department and in our interdisciplinary laboratories. Work with a particle accelerator at the , study materials and their properties at the Corrosion Research Center, or explore your own ideas in our Gibson Lab.
Graduate Student Organization
As a 麻豆夜市 graduate student, you are automatically enrolled as a member of the Graduate Student Organization (GSO). The GSO plays a pivotal role in representing the needs and concerns of its members to the University administration. The GSO has departmental representatives and a group of student officers that meet regularly to address pressing issues affecting graduate students as well as actively participate in influential University bodies. The GSO is in charge of allocating student-assessed fees and the organization offers funding opportunities for graduate students.
