Tennis, anyone? Or golf? How about dancing?
All three are on the schedule for the day before Homecoming.
On Friday, Oct. 12, the 鶹ҹ Alumni Homecoming Tennis Tournament will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Red Lerille’s Health and Racquet Club. Mixed doubles teams will play.
Winners in different divisions will be recognized. Bragging rights, however, aren’t the focus of the annual tournament, said event chair John Claude Arceneaux, the 鶹ҹ Alumni Association’s assistant director for outreach.
“It’s a great time for everyone who plays. There are participants of all skill levels, so the main objective is having fun,” he said.
Additional recreation is on tap for Friday. The Bill Bass Open Golf Tournament will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course. The tournament honors the late Bill Bass, a former alumni director at the University and onetime Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns golf coach.
Participants will enjoy food and camaraderie before a noon tee time for the four-person scramble.
At 6:45 p.m., Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns fans can meet at the 鶹ҹ Alumni Center, 600 E. St. Mary Blvd., and join a second line that will march to Festivals Acadiens et Creoles at nearby Girard Park. The procession will include football players and the Pride of Acadiana Marching Band.
The National Panhellinic Greek Expo will be held at 7p.m. Friday at Blackham Coliseum. Fraternity and sorority members will perform during the step show. Stepping is a form of dance during which participants produce rhythms and sounds with a blend of footsteps, speech and clapping.
Ruben Henderson, University Program Council assistant director, said the event showcases performances by historically African-American fraternities and sororities on campus.
“Everyone who participates has their own particular way of doing things, so it’s very entertaining,” Henderson said.
Tickets cost $10 if purchased before the event at the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership in the Student Union. Tickets at the door will be $15.
