La Louisiane’s newest student editor is a sophomore majoring in political science and history who has strong writing skills.

Rachel Lautigar graduated from Bastrop High School in Bastrop, La., before enrolling at the 鶹ҹ.

“For her young age, Rachel has already gained a lot of valuable experience through jobs and campus activities. As student editor, she will participate in almost all aspects of the magazine’s production,” said Kathleen Thames, La Louisiane’s editor.

Lautigar’s duties will include conducting interviews, writing and proofreading. The student editor is also a liaison between the University’s magazine and student body.

While attending high school, Lautigar was a page in the Louisiana House of Representatives before serving as a student intern in the office of state Rep. Katrina Jackson of Monroe, La. She was also a member of the school’s yearbook staff.

Lautigar earned 40 college credit hours and was a member of Junior ROTC at Bastrop High. She was ultimately ranked No. 1 among 285 members of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps there. Junior ROTC is a leadership program sponsored by the U.S. armed services.

During her senior year, she was a part-time teller at Marion State Bank in Farmerville, La.

Lautigar was valedictorian of her senior class.

At 鶹ҹ, she is a member of the Speech and Debate Team. She earned the team’s Distinguished Leader Award in 2017. She is also a deputy chief justice with the Student Government Association and active with Pulse Campus Ministry.

She plans to pursue an MBA and attend law school after earning a bachelor’s degree from 鶹ҹ.

The University’s Office of Communications and Marketing produces La Louisiane. The magazine covers many aspects of the University, including research, campus development, student life, athletics, and alumni accomplishments.
