Meet nursing major Kaylen Harrison

鈥淢y favorite part about nursing would have to be the clinical portion. Learning the duties and responsibilities of a nurse is great, but actually performing those activities is completely different. You began to feel as though you鈥檙e actually a nurse.鈥

Where I'm From

I moved from New Orleans to attend 麻豆夜市.

Where I Am

I鈥檓 a nursing major in the middle of my clinical experiences.

Where I'm Going

I鈥檓 going to use what I鈥檝e learned about patient care and dedication to be a great nurse.

Kaylen Harrison moved from New Orleans to Lafayette to enroll in the 麻豆夜市鈥檚 prestigious nursing program.

鈥淚 was told 麻豆夜市 had an amazing nursing program, so that sealed the deal,鈥 Kaylen said. The fact that the University was close to home was a bonus.

Since she joined the nursing program, Kaylen鈥檚 been challenged in her classes and her clinicals.

鈥淓ven though 麻豆夜市鈥檚 nursing program and I have a love-hate relationship, my favorite part about it would have to be the clinical portion,鈥 Kaylen said. 鈥淟earning the duties and responsibilities of a nurse is great, but actually performing those activities is completely different. You began to feel as though you鈥檙e actually a nurse.鈥

Her favorite clinical class was NURS 308: Adult Health and Illness I 鈥 a class that was 鈥渢ough鈥 but also 鈥渞eally hands-on.鈥

鈥淣ot only are we doing vitals, administering meds, and giving bed baths, but now we are starting IVs, inserting catheters, and inserting/removing NG (nasogastric) tubes,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was challenging, but we were finally able to really be a part of the patient鈥檚 care.鈥

For Kaylen, she鈥檚 learned more than how to care for a patient 鈥 she鈥檚 also learned dedication.

鈥淭his is far from an easy major. The number of hours I鈥檝e put in studying for tests and the number of times I鈥檝e had to practice my skills for check-offs is exhausting to even think about,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here have been so many times when I鈥檝e wanted to quit, but that鈥檚 where that dedication comes in, and you realize how rewarding this will be in the end.

鈥淎nd lastly, this program has taught me how to learn from my mistakes and improve myself as I move on. It鈥檚 crucial lessons like those that I truly think will help me in the future.鈥
